IPSC Holster GHOST Hydra S

Which holster for IPSC?

If you are looking for an IPSC holster that you intend to use in a match, the most important thing is that the holster's design complies with the IPSC rules.

There are a few important points to consider here:

  • It must not be a shoulder holster or a holster with a fastening strap (thigh) (see IPSC rules 5.2.7.1).
  • The holster must be constructed or adjusted in such a way that the uppermost part of the grip or backstrap (when holstered) is still above the top edge of the belt (see IPSC Rules 5.2.7.2).
  • The holster must not point the muzzle of the firearm more than one meter away from the shooter's feet when holstered. (See IPSC Rulebook 5.2.7.3)
  • Also prohibited are holsters that do not completely conceal the trigger guard or that require the use of the trigger finger to unlock/unlock the pistol. (See IPSC Rules 5.2.7.3)

In principle, dedicated IPSC holsters meet these requirements and have usually been optimized accordingly.

Should you therefore buy every IPSC holster blindly and simply choose the cheapest or most beautiful one?

NO!

The IPSC holsters from GHOST that we carry are not randomly selected. Our dealer margins are no better than those of others, and we have no obligation or agreement to distribute only GHOST IPSC holsters.

There are good reasons why we only carry this brand and only these selected IPSC holster models, which we would be happy to explain in detail.

What is important in a good IPSC holster?

  1. It's important that the holster has a sturdy mounting. This is essential to ensure that even with a sloppy draw, the weapon doesn't become jammed and thus, so to speak, remain stuck in the holster. This can happen, for example, if the holster is only equipped with a loose plastic mounting, which moves in such cases, thus blocking or hindering the drawing of the weapon.

At this point, we'd also like to point out that this only works as long as the base—that is, the IPSC belt —is stable! For this reason, we only offer the toughest and most stable IPSC belts: the DAA Premium Belt and the IPSC Link Belt LYNX .

  1. The pistol must be securely seated so it can't fall out. This is unlikely with a shell holster anyway, unless there's minimal draw resistance, which may not be adjustable (which can be the case with cheap holsters).

With sports holsters, things are different. For example, if a classic IPSC holster like this one is used:

IPSC Holster GHOST Ultimate

When using such holsters, I've personally witnessed more than enough cases of such a weapon falling out of the holster and landing on the ground. This is not only questionable from a safety perspective, but can potentially lead to a DQ in an IPSC match. Furthermore, the beautiful IPSC gun can be scratched or, in the worst case, even damaged.

Such holsters do offer the advantage that they have hardly any resistance when pulled and the weapon can be removed from the holster immediately after pulling forwards just a few millimeters, but the disadvantages clearly outweigh this!

It is imperative – almost paranoid – to always make sure that the weapon is properly holstered and that the safety is engaged.

This is both annoying and time-consuming—which prevents a well-rounded workout, especially with exercises that require multiple repetitions.

The whole thing looks better with IPSC holsters that are equipped with a barrel pin, such as the GHOST The One or The One EVO:

Here, the barrel pin provides a good reference point for holstering and also offers a certain degree of security. Is this a better solution?

Yes and no.

But here too, I have seen a weapon fall out of the holster several times because the weapon was not seated correctly on the barrel pin.

Furthermore, it is inevitable that you will have to look closely (sometimes even paranoid) when holstering, which is annoying and inefficient.

So what does the perfect IPSC holster look like?

There is a clear answer – the GHOST HYDRA !

These holsters are the benchmark and the best currently available on the market.

They combine all the necessary features from all worlds:

  • Hardly any pulling resistance - the same system is used here as with the Ultimate or The One.
  • Closed design – This protects the weapon well. On the one hand, it protects it from being "pushed out," and on the other hand, it protects it from scratches if you bump into something.
  • Safer and easier holstering without having to even glance at the holster
  • Stable, adjustable aluminum mounting
  • Simple but good security

The Hydra is available in two different versions:

GHOST HYDRA S

Ghost Hydra S IPSC holster front view

The top-of-the-line GHOST Hydra IPSC holster. This holster features an open design that not only makes the pistol fully visible but also allows for early forward draw. This IPSC holster is also adjustable at the bottom. This means you can adjust the holster using adjusting screws so that the pistol sits snugly and securely.

Drawing resistance is almost nonexistent thanks to the same system as the GHOST The One. The Hydra S is also equipped with the same intuitive and adjustable safety. As with most GHOST IPSC holsters, it is mounted on a sturdy, adjustable aluminum mounting.

GHOST HYDRA P

It was originally designed for shooting sports disciplines that require a shell holster. For this reason, it is made of Kydex and has a semi-open design.

The functions are the same as the Hydra S, except for the lack of the option to fix or better adjust the gun using adjusting screws.

The bottom line is that the Hydra P is the cost-effective alternative to the Hydra S and is absolutely unrivaled in this price range.

This holster is also interesting for shooters who prefer a classic Kydex holster design, but at the same time do not want to miss out on the advantages of a genuine IPSC sports holster!

GHOST THUNDER or GHOST HYBRID

For beginners and shooters who do not want to spend a lot of money on a holster or for those who prefer the design or handling of a classic shell holster, we recommend the GHOST Thunder or GHOST Hybrid .

The Hybrid and Thunder essentially use the same high-quality holster shell, which has adjustable draw resistance.

However, unlike the Hybrid, the Thunder is equipped with a more stable aluminum mount.
